About Ronja's
My name is Rebekkah, and I am so glad you found my little store.
Originally from Germany, I arrived in Peterborough via France, the UK, Montréal and Halifax, and have found a beautiful community of people equally enthusiastic about dressing their children sustainably and ethically and reducing the humongous strain we put onto our environment and our fellow humans (many of whom are children themselves!) because of our normalized overconsumption.
In the winter of 2017, when my twins were a few months old, I met up with a friend who had her tiny baby bundled in a bunting suit by Little Green Radicals, an organic, sustainable, and fairtrade brand out of the UK. It was the most beautiful piece and started my path of sourcing and enjoying bright and bold clothing both from within Canada and from Europe. After years of dressing my twins and our new baby in joyful clothes, Ronja's (pronounced Ron-Yahs) slowly took shape. The store is named after the main character of Astrid Lindgren's children's book Ronja the Robbers Daughter, who cries at the beauty of the forest, who conquers her fears and shouts at monsters, and who is brave and kind and gentle in her heart. Coincidentally, Ronja's also contains all the letters of my three children's first names (minus a silent h), making it even more meaningful.
Ronja's is here to let your kids be bold and colourful and playful. I believe clothes are empowering and offer an opportunity to speak volumes without using a single word.
Ronja's carries a mix of European brands, wool clothing (which we love for winter and shoulder seasons), as well as a large variety of more affordable everyday basics. I try to source bold and joyful prints whenever possible since clothes that are fun are more likely to be worn (reducing cost per wear), less likely to get lost at school or daycare (you'll always spot them on a lost and found table). Plus they make our kids happy.
If you are here and do not need anything for your children right now, I'm so glad you care enough to read this far and truly appreciate you taking the time. If you want to support this (and the many wonderful small consignment shops everywhere), share it with a friend, or tell a grandparent looking for a gift, or a colleague who is expecting.
We're here because of you, and your support means the world.
